National Fuels Smurfs

The National Benzole Smurf Campaign was launched in May 1978 by the British petroleum company National Benzole (commonly known as National Petrol).
It became one of the most successful and memorable UK marketing promotions of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Campaign Highlights & Mechanics: The Slogan & TV Adverts: Built around the catchphrase “You get service with a Smurf!”, the animated TV commercials depicted Smurfs running a National forecourt—checking oil, inflating tyres, and pumping petrol for motorists.

National Smurf: Created specifically for the UK campaign, this non-canonical Smurf character wore a cap featuring small wings, inspired by National Benzole’s famous winged Mercury head logo. He acted as the station manager leading the forecourt team.

Voice Work: The UK adverts featured voice work from British comedy legend Bill Oddie (from The Goodies), who voiced characters like Cheerful Smurf and Helpful Smurf. Notably, this campaign marked the very first time the Smurfs spoke English on television, predating the 1981 Hanna-Barbera cartoon series.

Merchandise & Collectibles: Drivers earned or purchased promotional items when filling up at National filling stations:
Schleich PVC Figurines: The core attraction was the pocket-sized PVC Smurf figurines manufactured by Schleich/Peyo.

The flagship figure was the Petrol Pump Attendant Smurf, featured with a petrol pump and nozzle.

Car Window Stickers & Accessories: National distributed promotional car stickers (such as Smurf footballers and musicians), leather keyrings, and plastic school rulers.

Jingle Single: The commercial jingle—set to the tune of Father Abraham’s The Smurf Song—was adapted into promotional records and radio spots.

Collector Legacy: The promotion ran into the early 1980s, leaving a lasting mark on UK pop culture. Today, the original 1970s/1980s Schleich National Petrol Attendant figures and complete pump sets remain popular items among vintage toy and petroliana collectors.
